Embracing the New Year

Well that’s it. Goodbye 2016, quite a good year for me personally, but a very strange and unsettling year when you take the bigger picture into account. Still, time to look forward to what 2017 may bring and to think about how you might shape the year to come.

For the last few years I have chosen a ‘Word of the Year’ to act as a touchstone and help me keep on track with my aspirations and dreams. Last year’s word was ‘create’. This was because I spent 2014 and 2015 planning to move house, moving and then having work done on the new house. None of this left me with much time at all for creating art, photography, or anything else. This year my word brought me back to my dreams and I have created more, though still not quite as much as I’d hoped. Below are some examples of my attempts at linocutting, at which I am very much a beginner!

As well as choosing my word of the year I also make a dream board to graphically capture my dreams and aspirations for the year. Again this helps focus me towards doing more of what I love during the year. Below are examples for 2014 & 2015.

This year my word is ‘focus’. The reason for this is that I am an ace procrastinator and without the structure of a job to go to, I find it all too easy to waste time (albeit in a pleasant way). Then I get frustrated because I haven’t created or achieved anything. I’m always so happy when I get stuck in to a project.

There are many ways of doing this kind of exercise and two excellent examples are to be found on Beth Kempton’s ‘Do What you Love’ website where you can download her ‘New Years Revolution’ template and Susannah Conway’s site where you can download ‘Unravel your Year’ Both are free you just need to sign up to their mailing lists. This is not a hardship as they both send interesting and informative stuff not too often!
Good luck with discovering your ‘Word of the Year’ – I’d love to know what you decide. In the meantime I wish you all a very happy healthy and peaceful New Year.
