A Room With a View
I love a good view. However my idea of a great view isn’t necessarily the same as yours. I like small views, on the whole panoramas leave me cold (exceptions being views over a city where you can pick out landmarks). OK so you can see lots of fields and maybe some hills in the distance, even three counties apparently. So what!
The views I love are small views, just one hill and some trees, maybe an attractive building and sky. The view from my bedroom window is just such a view. Small, looking over the medieval roofs, gardens, and two beautiful copper beeches.
Salisbury is built on a medieval grid system (eat your heart out New York) known as chequers. Our house is on one of these chequers, the only one left that has all four sides intact and still has gardens in the middle. So here we are in the middle of the city with bird song and butterflies – what’s not to love?
One of the things I find really special about this view is the way the light changes during the day. On the whole winter and spring light is most magical, both at dawn and sunset when often the whole vista seems to light up. Which is your favourite of the pics I have posted below?
All the photos were taken with my iPhone, some were enhanced with a painterly effect using the Brushstrokes app.
I’d love to hear what you think constitutes a good view
My favorite is the snowy winter image, followed by Bright Spring and Summer. I grew up in the wide open spaces of the American Southwest, and I am one who enjoys a spacious view and big skies, but you do have a lovely and ever-changing view. I can see why you love it.
Thanks Leon. I do like big skies with views that stretch away over the horizon they give a feeling of space. The ones I’m not so keen on are the ones where you’re at a high point looking down with lots of fields and houses etc into the distance – its probably quite a British kind of view. Thanks for helping me to refine my thinking on this.
It’s a tie!! I love both views equally. And I can see why you love them too.
Actually the second picture is a slider with a number of views, so it looks like it may not be showing up properly. Glad you like my views though
Oh my gosh… you live in Salisbury!! I’ve always been quite enamored by Salisbury and all I’ve read about it (I’m in Australia). I like photos of the deep interiors of forests and close-ups of what you can find there. I also like photos/views of scenes that have curiosities to look at….. people going about their day (I love people watching). I really love views of gorgeous home exteriors and rooms that have personality and spirit. I do also like views of rolling green hills (think Italy) and beautiful sunsets. Most of all (and I’ve written about this), I love views of golden wheat fields with the sun glinting off the wheat at sunset….. magical (comes from living in an agricultural area during my childhood).
I’m definitely with you on the wheat fields – hope you get to visit Salisbury one day its a lovely city.
